This weekend, thousands of people were married in San Francisco. They drove for miles, they waited in the rain, they stood in lines that wrapped around the block. Today, on the day after Valentine's Day, Heather and I went to City Hall to cheer as they exited the building. People threw flower petals and rice, gave out candy and Champagne, and applauded with wild abandon as each couple came out the door. The mainstream news media is going to say a lot of things about this weekend in San Francisco. They're going to say these people weren't serious. That it's just another example of those crazy San Franciscans. That this is all some big joke. But I can tell you this: I was there. I saw these people's faces. I talked to them. And there was not one person taking this lightly. There was no mockery of anything. This was all about love. All about acceptance. And all about equality. There were protesters there. Lined up with signs about God and Righteousness. But they stood across the street - too far away to see the joy on the newlyweds faces. And when the rain came, the protesters fled and only the devoted stayed. And I was among them. My own wedding is a few months away. And I can tell you right now that planning a wedding is stressful. But today reminded me of the joy that weddings are about. And it made me thankful that I've found the person I want to marry, and we're allowed to do it whenever we want. |
