Dream Team 31 October 2004

Yesterday Mayor Gavin Newsom walked District 5 (my district) with his two choices for the Board of Supervisors: Andrew Sullivan and Nick Waugh. Thanks to Instant Runoff Voting, voters can pick three candidates and Newsom has endorsed these two.

It was a surreal walk, all smiles and handshakes and voter encouragement. (Someone from the Sullivan campaign caught me working.) Favorite moments:

  • Newsom, who has famously shellacked hair, walking into the new beauty store and asking loudly, "Do you guys sell hair gel?"
  • The woman who, when asked what was the most important issue on the ballot this Tuesday, replied: "Getting Bush out."
  • Newsom interrupting a woman's phone call to remind the person on the other end to vote.
  • Local two year-old Rachel taking Newsom's water and then offering to share.

I don't know what this says about our mayor (and me), but when Willie Brown was in office, I always thought of him as "The Mayor." But with Newsom, I have to stop myself from calling him "Gav."
