Look behind you 6 August 2004

At the foot of Montmartre, Paris.

If there's one rule I've learned about photography in public places, it's look behind you. Wherever you go, whatever you're shooting, every once in a while, turn 180 degrees and see what's behind you.

In Montmartre, there's a huge hill called Place St. Pierre. At the top of the hill is a carousel, which was made famous by a scene in Amelie. As Heather and I and a hundred other tourists looked up the hill, I remembered my rule and turned around and was treated to a young kid mugging for his mom. Priceless.

Someday I'd like to do a series of photos at monuments, looking the wrong way.
